MOT
By law an MOT is a necessary purchase for every driver to ensure that your vehicle is safe to be driven on the road. An MOT test is an annual road safety assessment to ensure that your vehicle (car, motorcycle, buses or other light goods vehicle) is in a roadworthy condition and also meets the environmental standards required.
Your vehicle must have an MOT annually if it is over 3 years old, however an MOT does not act as a guarantee of the vehicle’s mechanical condition and it only applies to the condition of the tested items at the time that the test is undertaken.
Your MOT must be carried out at a garage which has a licence to undertake MOTs and as such should display the three triangle blue and white MOT sign to inform drivers that the garage is authorised to undertake MOTs.
An MOT will test 6 elements:
- Steering and suspension
- Brakes
- Lights
- Tyres and wheels
- Seatbelts
- General
If your vehicle does not have a valid MOT certificate then the vehicle is not eligible to be driven on any public roads, so it is vital that you keep your MOT up to date and don’t let it lapse. A road tax disc will not be issued without a valid MOT. If you are caught driving without a valid MOT then you will receive a fine of up to £1000.
If your vehicle fails the MOT test for any reason then you will be issued with a VT30 Certificate which will outline the item(s) the vehicle has failed on so that you can get the required work carried out. A lot of MOT failures are due to small things such as light bulbs not working – a quick check before the MOT takes place can help reduce the costs involved with a re-test.
